Snape why that absurd

Or the gentle pressure of a wizened hand laying on his shoulder and the echo of a lilting laugh that shone brightly in emerald eyes and always seemed to staunch the deep ache in his very soul that has haunted him since he could remember.

It is peaceful and for the first time in a long time, Severus feels calm. Keep reading. Originally posted by theladyintweed.

Harry looked at her as if Evelyn had just asked him to fight a troll with both his hands tied behind his back. Maybe he just needed a moment to take it in, she thought. Granted, she should probably have warned him at least, before showing up at his door out of the blue.

The moment he laid eyes on her, the poor lad already looked like he thought something was wrong. Surely if she had anything to tell him, she would do in any of the numerous luncheons, family reunions and tea parties where they always met each other. Severus did whatever he could to avoid going to these gatherings with her, which meant Evelyn often attended alone. The war had ended a full three years ago, but there was still a palpable unease between Harry and Severus, and nobody knew that better than Evelyn.

Severus had confided in her, with the same discomfort of sharing something shameful, that he still felt conflicted about Harry. He had, somewhat, moved past animosity. After all the two of them had gone through in the war, and after all they went through after the war, with the constant hounding of the media, the rogue Death Eaters still trying to kill them both, with all the unspoken trauma and sorrow they unwillingly shared, they had found a sort of common ground, a strange sort of connection that neither was fully willing to admit.

Deep down, Severus wanted to extend an olive branch, Evelyn knew, but he was too proud, too stubborn to make the first move. Severus would never say he wanted to get closer to Harry, he would never admit, as he rebuild his life little by little, as he tried with all he had to leave his past behind and be with her fully, as a man sure of himself and his feelings, that he would have liked for the only living piece of Lily to, somehow, be there.

But, aside from Minerva, he had no family or friends to call his own. In a sort of bizarre way, Harry was close to it as he had. If she had been alive, Evelyn thought, Severus would have wanted her to be around.

To share his happiness in the way only a best friend can. He would have wanted her to visit them, to look at pictures of their holidays in Ireland, to share funny family stories, to be present at their wedding.

And that was the reason Evelyn was here, standing in front of Harry, in his flat, or rather the flat where he lived when he was on call for the Ministry his real home was, of couse, with the Weasleys. The reason she had to talk to him in private, away from Severus, Ginny and everybody else. Because Severus would never do this, as much as Evelyn knew deep down he wanted to.

Evelyn wanted to do this as well. She knew she had a debt to Lily. One she might never be able to repay. If not for her, for this woman Evelyn had never met, she might never have met Severus. Or at least not the Severus she knew, the Severus she loved.

Lily had been a fundamental part of his being, of who he was and who he became. And who he was, with all his pain, all his sorrows and sacrifices, that man he was, was the man Evelyn loved, more than life itself.

She had Lily to thank for much of that. Severus cares deeply about you. In his own sour, crabby way. If Severus had any doubt that his mother-in-law had a direct connection with whatever heavenly powers there were, it was entirely gone. Her mother however, had assured him: the weather would be fine. And fine it was indeed.

The sky was outrageously blue above their heads, a gentle sun shone over them, just warm enough to remind everyone that it was, in fact, Summer, and a soft breeze barely moved the white tablecloth that covered the simple, makeshift altar behind him. There would be a small reception afterwards, more like a family luncheon than a wedding party. After all, this was nothing but a formality. A nice opportunity for photos and merrymaking. For all intents and purposes, in all the ways that mattered, Severus had made the commitment long, long ago.

If he had to pinpoint the exact moment he knew he belonged to her, and would for the rest of his life, the exact moment he knew Evelyn had all of him, his entire heart and soul, he would say it had been in that beach in Andalucia, back in When he told her he was a wizard.

When she took him for all he was. From that moment on, no piece of paper or ritual mattered anymore. It was sealed. All in all, as far as rituals went, Severus had been more concerned about the civil ceremony than the religious one. They had done it the week before, in Cokeworth. Just the two of them to sign the papers at the City Hall.

That ceremony was theirs alone. Nobody else in the world but the officiant and two witnesses, two complete strangers pulled from the corridor in a haste. Just the two them, and their own intimate hopes and dreams, their happiness, theirs and theirs alone. And, in all its simplicity, it took care of something Severus thought was far more important than photos or celebration: it meant stability, officiality.
