Can Windows XP be reinstalled using the files in the I folder? A friend asked me if he could create a boot cd and reinstall windows using this folder, as he doesn't have the original manufacturer's disc.

It is probably on the hard disk to make it easy to access those file without having to insert the CD into the drive. To verify that it will be used in that manner you can check its reference in the registry. You navigate the registry the same way you navigate the nested folders in Windows Explorer.
