Intramuscular injection produced antibacterial concentrations in the serum and urine.
The drug is excreted almost entirely in active form by the kidney by glomerular filtration with little or no reabsorption. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections were successfully treated; cases with complicating conditions often relapsed.
Gram-negative bacteremia responded infrequently to the doses used, but treatment was sometimes life saving. Labyrinthine intoxication was the only serious side effect observed and was always associated with pre-existing renal failure or a large dose. Coronavirus Resource Center.
